Who is eligible for cover?
The travel insurers on our panel can only cover Australian residents who qualify for Medicare within Australia. Medical Travel Compared is unable to search for travel insurance to cover non-Australian residents.
Is there an age limit on single or annual trip insurance?
No. Medical Travel Compared can search for travel insurance quotes for all ages. However, the number of annual multi-trip quotes for older travellers may be limited due to age restrictions imposed by the providers that we search.
Can you get cover for a one-way trip?
No. Cover can only be provided for trips that begin and end in Australia.
Are all the travel insurers featured on Medical Travel Compared regulated?
Yes. Only travel insurance providers that are authorised and regulated by the ASIC are allowed on our panel.
Can we find competitive quotes for people without medical conditions?
Yes. If you have no medical conditions to declare you will find quotes highly competitive. We specialise in finding competitive travel insurance quotes for everyone, including senior travellers and travel companions.
What is a pre-existing medical condition?
A pre-existing medical condition is any medical condition for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment was recommended or received before applying for a travel insurance policy.
Why do you need cover for pre-existing medical conditions?
Medical expenses abroad can be very expensive. Having travel insurance that includes cover for existing medical conditions is the best way to ensure you are protected from financial loss in the event of having to cancel the holiday or receive emergency medical treatment abroad.
Do you have to declare your medical conditions?
Yes. It’s important to declare any past or present medical conditions. Failing to do so could invalidate your travel insurance policy and you may not be covered in the event of a claim.
Can an insurer cover some of your medical conditions and exclude others?
No. When using Medical Travel Compared to compare quotes, you will need to declare any medical condition that falls outside of our medical declaration. That is, any condition for which you have attended a hospital, clinic or doctors surgery, or have been prescribed medication or received treatment for within the last two years. You are also required to tell us about any respiratory, cancerous, heart or circulatory conditions (including problems with blood flow, strokes, high blood pressure or cholesterol) ever diagnosed.
If you’re on a waiting list for treatment or surgery, can you get cover?
Travel insurance policies exclude cover for medical conditions where treatment or surgery is pending. In order to obtain full cover, its best to apply for travel insurance once the procedure is complete and the doctor has signed you off.
If your condition is under investigation and you have not received a diagnosis, can you get cover?
No. Travel insurers are unable to cover undiagnosed medical conditions. The insurers on our panel require the investigation to be concluded before they offer a quote.
Can you be covered for the pre-existing conditions of a non-traveller?
No. Should a close family relative become unwell due to an existing medical condition, causing you to cancel or cut your holiday short, you will not be able to claim. Travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions applies only to the travellers insured on the policy.
If you have a policy and your health or medication has since changed, do you have to tell your insurer?
Yes. Any changes to your health or medication that occurs before your departure needs to be declared to your insurer.
Are there any important policy conditions regarding health?
You must be fit to undertake your planned trip. You must not travel against medical advice or with the intention of obtaining medical treatment or consultation abroad. Cover will only be provided for pre-existing conditions that you have declared and which your insurance provider has accepted in writing.

How will you receive your policy documents?

How do you make a claim?
Full details of what you need to do to make a claim will be detailed in the policy documents provided to you by your insurer.
